Sophie Rowland

Ilion - Mrs. Sophie Rowland, 93, formerly of 434 Tulip Dr. passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012 in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born in Herkimer on April 11, 1919, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Branka Nemyj and she attended Mohawk schools. She was married to Theodore R. Rowland on October 22, 1937 in Annunciation Church Rectory, Ilion. Theodore passed away on September 1, 2004. Sophie was employed as an Assembler for GE, Utica for many years until her retirement. She was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church. Sophie is survived by two daughters and one son in law, Loretta Gilhart of Farmington, NY and Marguerite and Richard Tulloch of Ilion; one brother, Adam Nemyj of AZ; seven grandchildren, Richard Tulloch, Randy Tulloch, Kim and her husband, James Catalina, Tracy Skelton, Kelly Gilhart, Robert Tulloch and Cathi and her husband, Kevin Welch; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Sophie was a very special Nana who will be greatly missed by her family. She was pre-deceased by her son in law, William Gilhart, one brother, John Nemyj and one sister, Mary Kinville. Her funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 AM from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 9:30 AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4-8 PM at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home.
