Miss Margaret B. Ward Herkimer - Margaret B. Ward, 91, of the Claxton Manor, passed away Thursday evening, February 24, 2005 in Folts Home. She was born in Stewarts Landing, on April 6, 1913, the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine Brereton Ward. Margaret graduated from Newport High School in 1931, then attended and gradutated from Oneonta Normal School in 1934. From 1934 to 1939, she taught grades K through 8 at the Poplar Tree Country School #7 in Poland. From 1939 to 1940, she worked in the Donlon Glove Shop, Herkimer. From 1940 to 1942, she taught grades K through 8 in the Herkimer School District. She then taught grades 5th and 6th in the Leonardsville School system until 1969. When Leonardsville became part of the Mt. Markham School District in 1969, she taught 6th grade until her retirement in 1975. She was always delighted when a former student would recongnize her and stop to say "hello". After her retirement, she became an active volunteer and a member of Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Margaret made and delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered for the American Red Cross at bloodmobiles and worked on the Shepherd's Table until 2002. She was also a member of the NYS Retired Teacher Association and the Herkimer County of CNY Retired Teachers Association. Margaret was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church, a member of its Altar Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary and Lady of Fatima devotions. She enjoyed spending holidays with her family, traveling, reading and playing cards with her friends. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Ernestene and Richard Williams, David and Melinda Ward and Elizabeth and Donald Lewis, all of Leonardsville. Several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Margaret was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Ward in 1920 and Dorothy Ward in 2003, and two brothers, James Ward in 1970 and Daniel Ward in 1973. Her funeral will be held 9:15AM, Monday, February 28, 2005 from Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and 10:00 AM in St. Francis De Sales Church where a Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor. Spring Interment will be in St John´s Cemetery, Newport. Calling Hours will be 4-7 PM, Sunday, February 27, 2005 at the funeral home. Margaret's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Drs. David Liu and Virendra Sharma.
