E. Herkimer - Mr. Joseph John Hudak, 81, of 103 Pine Grove Rd. passed away peacefully Thursday, September 13, 2012 at home with his family by his side. He was born in Scranton, PA on November 5, 1930, the son of the late Joseph John and Mary Rose Chwan Hudak, Sr. He attended Scranton schools and graduated from West Scranton High School with the class of 1946. In Joseph's youth, he loved to play baseball and ice skate. He served during the Korean War in the US Air Force and was Honorably Discharged on July 11, 1955 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was married to Joan Elizabeth MacDonald on April 21, 1956 in St. Francis Church, Interlaken, NY. Joseph served as the Town of Berkshire Town Justice, Town Councilman and the Berkshire Library Board for many years. He was a member of the Boy Scout Commission, Ithaca, the IBEW Union, Binghamton, the American Legion, Elks Club, Berkshire Fire Department, Life Member of the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association, the Ro-Ki Club and Moose Lodge, all of Owego. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Binghamton, St. John the Evangelist, Newark Valley and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Temple, GA. Following his retirement, Joe and Joan relocated to Temple, GA. During his retirement, he loved to go to flea markets, drive his golf cart and he learned to oil paint through the Alexander Method. He enjoyed collecting coins and antique clocks and repairing them. He especially loved his homes on Seneca Lake and Lake Buckhorn and the time spent there with family and friends. In Joe's youth, he was employed by Snee and Sunday Locksmith, Scranton and later by EJ Shoe Factory, Binghamton. Following his time with the Air Force, he was employed by Gregor Electric, Link Aviation and lastly as a supervisor for NYSEG in the Owego Gas Department until his retirement in 1990, after 33 years of dedicated service. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Joan Elizabeth Hudak; two daughters and sons in law, LuAnn Hudak and her husband, Terry Cobbs of Hertford, NC and Judith Lynne and her husband, Patrick Fernandes of E. Herkimer; one granddaughter, Alysia and her husband, SGT Neil Damin, US Army of Ft. Drum; one brother and sister in law, John Robert and Elaine Hudak of Binghamton; his in laws, Margrit Hudak of Endicott and Phyllis and James Joslyn of Willard, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Mary Ann Secoolish and one brother, Alexander Hudak. His funeral will be held privately at the convenience of his family from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St, Herkimer. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd, New Hartford, NY 13413. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Joseph's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff of Hospice for the wonderful care and kindness shown to him during his illness and passing.
