Mr. Joseph Francis Grates lll

Herkimer- Mr. Joseph Francis Grates III, 72, of Herkimer passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021 in St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born in Ilion, NY on January, 28, 1949, the son of the late Joseph and Pauline McFaul Grates Jr. He attended Frankfort schools and graduated from Frankfort – Schuyler High School with the class of 1967. He later attended SUNY Oswego. He was married to Maryjane Parsons on June, 20, 1970. Joe later married Glenda Brown on July 15, 2000. Glenda passed away on June 21, 2020. He was employed as the Cafeteria Manager at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center for many years until his retirement in 2015. Joseph was of the Catholic faith and was an avid NY Yankees and San Francisco 49ers fan.

Joseph is survived by his daughter and son in law, Dr. Terri Day and her husband, John of Nashville, TN; his son, SMSgt William Grates US Air Force, Ret. of Papillion, NE; one brother, Paul Grates of Frankfort;  two sisters and one brother in law, JoAnn and her husband, Patrick Volz of Layton, UT and, Philamaine Burks of Alvarado, TX; his daughter -in-law, Ami Grates of FL; one grandson Noah Grates; one step-grandson Aarron Howard and several nieces, nephews and cousins.. He was predeceased by his son Joseph F. Grates IV.

Per Joe’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral. His funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, Herkimer.
