Charleston, SC - Frankfort - Jeremiah J. Ashcroft, a retired engineer, died February 11, 2014 in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. Ashcroft was born in Utica on April 8, 1917. He attended St. Francis De Sales and Utica Free Academy. He graduated from Clarkson College of Technology, in Potsdam. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia as training officer for platoon, company and battalion commands. When he was stationed overseas he was Engineer Officer for the Middle East Service Command and retired as Colonel in the Military Reserve. After his military service in 1946 he was elected Assemblyman, Second District of Oneida County. Subsequently, he became engineer supervisor of the Military Construction Program and Chief of Master Planning at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. He moved to Florida in 1959, where he was a Facilities Engineer, Range Development, USAF Atlantic Missile Range, Florida. He then became a NASA Engineer, Design Engineering Division, Kennedy Space Center, Florida, until his retirement in 1982.
He is survived by three sons; Jeremiah J. II of Dawsonville, Georgia, Timothy D. of Tallahassee, Florida, Kevin M. of Jacksonville, Florida; one daughter, Eileen A. Ames of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Richard of San Jose, CA and James of Marcy. Jeremiah is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, E. Margaret Ashcroft and his sister, Theresa Roy.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frankfort, with the Deacon James Bower, officiating. Interment arrangements have been entrusted to the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. 203 Second Ave. Frankfort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston, S.C. 29407 or Lutheran Hospice, 1885 Rifle Range Road, Suite 46, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. 29464.
