Herkimer - Mr. James Chappy Surace, 91, of 334 William St., Herkimer, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2008 in St. Luke's Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Herkimer on October 12, 1916, the son of the late Nunziato and Frances Surace and he attended Herkimer schools and graduated in 1934. He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps. For many years, Mr. Surace worked for Derby Sportswear in Herkimer. He also worked as a Technician for Univac Ilion & Utica Plants until retirement. He was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church. Mr. Surace was a member of the Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4915 and served as a Past Commander. Chappy was an avid and devoted Yankees fan for 85 years.
Chappy is survived by one brother, John & Mary Surace of Little Falls; five sisters & two brothers in law, Frances Poccia of Utica, Carmella Klys of Herkimer, Ida & Walter Gronemeyer of Rio Mirage, CA, Josephine "Cookie" & John Iocovozzi and Mary Gigliotti all of Herkimer; his in laws, Victoria Surace and, Carmen Facilli both of Herkimer and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by seven sisters, Catherine Giambrone, Dolores Facilli, Yolanda De Mars, Nancy Procopio, Antoinette Rando, Helen Vella and Angeline Surace and one brother, Jamaine Surace.
His funeral will be held Thursday morning at 8:30 from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 9:00 in Sts. Anthony And Joseph Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato, Pastor. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4-8 at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home. The family would like to thank Dawn Mann, Chappy's caregiver, for her devotion in the well being of Chappy and for taking such excellent care of him these past few years.
