Gregory A. Varano

Mr. Gregory A. Varano Herkimer - Mr. Gregory A. Varano, 78, of 311 Park Ave passed away Thursday, January 27, 2005 in Valley Health Services. He was born in Herkimer on January 16, 1927, the son of the late Thomas and Catherine Talarico Varano and he attended Herkimer schools, Graduating from Herkimer High School with the Class of 1944. Following his graduation he enlisted in the US Navy as a Seaman First Class abroad the USS Fall River in the Pacific Theater and was Honorably Discharged on July 25, 1946. Following his military service he attended MVCC and the Troy Veterans Vocational School. He was married to Elda Mornelli in St. Joseph´s Church, Little Falls in 1949. Elda passed away in February 1, 1971. He was later married to Joyce Campbell Malek on August 1, 1986 in St. Anthony Of Padua, Utica. Mr. Varano was employed as a Chief Manufaturing Engineer for Chicago Pnuematic, Utica until his retirement in November of 1986 after 35 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement he served as a consultant for an additional 2 years. He was a Communicant of St. Francis De Sales Church and a member V.F.W Post #4915, Herkimer, Tony R. George Post #6, Herkimer, East Herkimer Fish And Game Club and a charter member of the Herkimer Lions Club. He was Certified member of the Society of American Engineers. Greg was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was an avid golfer and hunter and was a "true blue" Yankees fan. The one word to describe Greg is gentleman. Gregory is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Varano; he was the beloved father of four daughters and one son in law, Darlene Varano of West Palm Beach, FL, Cynthia & Paul Nagle of Cicero, Michele Varano of Liverpool and he was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Bortniak On September 29, 2000; one sister & brother in law, Theresa & Thomas Varano of Herkimer; one brother & sister in law, Francis & Rita Varano of Herkimer; his step children, Richard & Susan Malek of Frankfort, Linda and Richard La Clair of Utica, Michael & Laurie Malek of Plattsburgh and Karen & Ronald Reina of Utica, fifteen grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. His funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:15 PM from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 2:00 PM in St. Francis De Sales Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by the Rev. Mark Cunningham. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling Hours will be Friday from 4-8 at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home. Members of the VFW will meet Friday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home for services.
