Herkimer - Mrs. Catherine "Kate" Sciortino, 84, of 203 W. Smith St. passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 in her home with her family by her side.
She was born in Pianopoli, Province of Catanzaro, Italy on November 4, 1928, the daughter of the late Antonio and Josephine Nanci Maida. She attended schools in Italy and came to this country when she was 8 and attended Herkimer schools. She was married to Vito Sciortino on October 2, 1948 in St. Anthony's Church by the Rev. Gustav Purficato. Kate was at one time employed by Derby's Sportswear and later as a Floor Lady for P & K Dress Factory, Little Falls. She was a faithful communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church and the president, founder and very active member of the Crafty Ladies, a member of the Rosary Society, the Sacred Heart Society and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Kate is survived by her beloved husband, Vito Sciortino; one son and daughter in law, Michael and Donna Sciortino of Herkimer; one daughter and son in law, Connie and James Thurston of Endicott; five grandchildren, Lisa and her husband, James Recore, Matthew Sciortino and his wife, Valerie, Jessica Sciortino, Michael Sciortino and Andrew Thurston; four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Kyle, Emily and Ella; one sister, Dolores Scalise of Schenectady; one brother and sister in law, Gus and Julie Maida of Herkimer and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one brother, Patsy Maida.
Her funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, 228 S. Main St., Herkimer where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 at Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer.
