Herkimer - Ms. Caroline M. Fiato, 83, of 311 William St., beloved aunt of the Peruzzi, Savo and Fiato families, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 2, 2010 in Valley Health Services. She remained courageous and determined right up until she was called home to her Lord.
Caroline was born in Herkimer on November 8, 1926, the daughter of the late Alessandro and Francesca Moscaro Fiato and she attended Herkimer schools. She was employed as a Button Hole Maker for P&K Dress Factory and later for Jonathon Logan Dress Factory, Little Falls for over 24 years and she was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church.
Caroline was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, the Herkimer Seniors and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was very involved with the Democratic Party and was involved with fundraising. She was and avid bowler, walker and was an advocate for children.
Caroline is survived by her beloved brother, Vincent James Fiato of Elephant Butte, NM; eleven nieces, nine nephews, sixteen great nieces, fifteen great nephews, forty-two great-great nephews and nieces and several cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Peruzzi and Mary Savo and three brothers, Rocco J. Fiato, Patsy J. Fiato, Dominick Fiato and seven brothers who preceded her in death in their childhood.
Her funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9:00AM from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer and at 9:30AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Vail. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 1-3 and 6-8 at the funeral home. Members of the Third Order of St. Francis will meet Wednesday evening at 6:15 and the Herkimer Seniors at 6:30 at the funeral home for services.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Caroline's memory to Valley Health services or to a charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Caroline's family would like to express their many thanks to her special friend, James Emrich. Their friendship developed when he offered her a ride on a stormy day after mass. He continued to pick her up for the 8:00am mass every Sunday and for grocery shopping. He truly is a wonderful friend to her.
